Question 1

How much does it cost to restore a piano?

Accepted Answer

Restoration costs can vary widely. Basic repairs might be included in a standard tuning. Larger mechanical repairs can range from $1,500 to $6,500. Major restorations typically start from $7,500 and can exceed $30,000 depending on the piano. Full quotes are only provided after a detailed inspection.

Question 2

How do I receive a piano restoration quote?

Accepted Answer

The only way to provide an accurate restoration quote is to book an on-site inspection. I’ll assess the piano in person and, if restoration is worthwhile, I’ll credit the inspection fee toward the total quote.

Question 3

What do I need to consider before restoring a piano?

Accepted Answer

Consider whether the piano is structurally sound, whether it holds sentimental value, how the restoration cost compares to its future value, and whether it will meet the needs of the person playing it. I can help you assess all of these during an inspection.

Question 4

Do you repair sticky or stuck keys?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sticky keys are usually caused by humidity or friction and can often be fixed during a standard tuning service. If the issue is more serious, I’ll explain the repair options and costs during the visit.

Question 5

What if my piano has a broken string?

Accepted Answer

Middle and treble strings can usually be replaced during a tuning appointment and cost $60 to $120. Bass strings are custom made and may cost up to $340. New strings stretch quickly and often require a follow-up tuning.

Question 6

Why is my piano making strange sounds?

Accepted Answer

Clicks, buzzes, or vibrations are common in older pianos. These sounds are often caused by loose screws, missing felts, or foreign objects inside the case. I can usually identify and resolve the issue during an appointment.

Question 7

What if my piano pedals aren’t working properly?

Accepted Answer

Most pedal issues are minor and can be fixed quickly during a service. In rare cases, worn or poorly designed pedal mechanisms may require more extensive repair or restoration. I’ll explain the best options once I’ve assessed the piano.
